What is a Flute?


What is a Flute?


A Flute is a musical instrument which belongs to the woodwind family. It produces its sound from the flow of air against an edge, instead of using a reed, like the other woodwind instruments.

Types of Flutes

There are lots of types of flutes that were made all over the globe. Here you can discover some of them.
Aeolian Organ-Melanesia

Tall pole planted to the ground. The pole has holes in the side that creates a sound when the wind passes.

The Nay-Egypt

Made of bamboo, wood or metal
Can be 3 ft long
It is played by resting your bottom lip and is blown across the top edge

Nose Flute-All over the world


Played like a recorder, but where you rest the lip, it is replaced by the nose
Air is blown through one nostril, as the thumb holds the other closed
In some countries the air blown is considered magical
Sometimes played in religious ceremonies
Bosun's Pipe-Sailors


To direct, summon or salute others on board
10 cm long
Only produces two notes
Cup hand, open or close fingers while blowing into the mouthpiece to create rythm with the notes
China-Di

Played for 1000 years
It is made of bamboo
Small tissue covers one hole to make the sound

China-Pigeon Whistle

Attached to the bird's tail

Wind in the sky makes the sound while the bird flies
